The Projection Certificate

The Projection Certificate: For many year's there hasn't been a qualification or exam for projectionists, but with the ever increasing Health & Safety issues it was thought that it would be a good idea if there was a ceertificate of technical compitance which was awarded. More details of the BKSTS/CEA Projection Certiicate can be found here
Criteria for Proj Cert:

Read, signed & understands relevant H&S Policy and ensures that it is fully implemented.
Participates in prescribed H&S training activities.
Understands Regulations/Rules relating to emergency lighting and evacuation.
Can carry out evacuation, and take necessary action if equipment fails.

Film and Projection
Demonstrates correct procedures for lacing up film in order to prevent film damage.
Checks and adjusts focus, racking, ratio and sound levels
Monitors sound quality and levels in the auditorium
Can identify all the key parts of the projection equipment, including the film path.
Understands the construction of film, speed of projection, and can identify sound tracks and ratios.
Can demonstrate the making of a join.


Can identify film damage, the likely causes, and remedial action to be taken.
Understands timesheets, and ensures that programmes run to time.
Knows who to contact in case of problems or emergencies.
Can start show competently, both manually, and using automation/interlock (if installed).
Understands and follows company procedures for the receipt and dispatch of film.
Can make up advert and trailer packages and insert into the relevant part of the programme.

Maintenance and Organisation

Demonstrates knowledge of Companies’ preventative maintenance procedures for projection and sound equipment; including checking and topping up oil levels, examining parts for wear, cleaning lenses and sound optics etc etc.
Carries out routine housekeeping duties, such as cleaning projection rooms and equipment, using approved methods and materials.
Knows where to find all projection room spare parts.

Xenon Lamps

Can change and line up a xenon lamp, using all relevant company safety procedures and equipment.
Records the change of lamp.


Health and Safety
This is how not to be a projectionist:

The folowing rules apply when using any of the Flix equipment:

Whenever a film is being spliced there should be at least two people in the pod, including the person splicing or desplicing the film.
It is recommended that there should be no more than four people in the pod when a film is being spliced.
No one is to splice a film until they have been fully trained by an experienced member of the committee.
The first film someone splices should be overseen by an experienced member of committee, but not necessarily the person who trained them.
Long hair must be fasten in such a way that it cannot fall into a reel, or any other piece of equipment
Baggy clothes must not be worn when splicing.
Items of clothing, e.g. jumpers, must not be tied around your waist/shoulders etc when splicing. Hats must not be worn when splicing.
When the reels on the tower are in motion the person who is splicing the film should wear a pair of goggles and gloves
When starting/stopping the reels the gloves provided must be worn.
Ensure all reels are securely on the tower and all nuts are screwed in place before using the tower.
Do not use any equipment you have not been trained to use.
Do not turn on the power to anything you are not going to be using,
Do not stop the reels with your bare hands, feet, other body parts – covered or bare, only use the controls and your hands if you are wearing the safety gloves provided.
